after a quick 4 years hiatus, filled with releases on innervisions, maeve and a couple of remixes, aera is finally back on his own aleph music imprint with 3 unique tracks. a1. two planets is the most obvious track of the ep. an exercise in outsider trance, a pulsating, polyrhythmic synth propels the track forward, the intricate 707 pattern keeps a steady pace, while background strings provide all the drama. b1. stylistically reminiscent of aeras first releases on aleph music, black glitz is the deepest track of the bunch. floating on a cloud of dreamy pads and voices, that arpeggio makes you realise immediately who you are dealing with. b2. maskull is a rather ambiguous little tune. somewhat rough around the edges, sparkling in the darkness of late nights, dwelling in voices and fog, this is the one for the heads.

among all the aliases used by the great piero umiliani, m. zalla is perhaps his most rich and surprisingly multifarious: mainly used to produce experimental records that had little commercial appeal, this ‘nom de plume’ (along with moggi) is tied to memorable episodes of his career, releases such as “problemi d’oggi” (literally “today’s problems”), “mondo inquieto” (i.e. “an unsettling world”), and also “suspense”, now reissued by schema records. the vinyl release includes a cd-copy of the album.

primavera may lifts you from ordinary life: the apparition of rain clouds and droplets blur into a soft curtain over the world as the whir of delicate hi-hats glisten in a muted sunlight. imagine a moment where the most inanimate inhabitants of the earth ghost dance before disappearing into nothing. makker s spoken vocals add a crestfallen hue to the vanished. she monotonously recites her regret: -everything is dancing / everything is crying / it can feel so heavy / before it has begun- a denser, yet similarly sorrowful song, before i fall asleep is sculpted around nimble strings and webbed by breathy vocals, remaining slightly suspended, as if levitating just above the verdant ground. halfway through primavera april, the track is transformed by acid showers, a lead synth lifts off to reveal a ravaged landscape, diametrically opposing the previous peace. the ambient acceptance snow closes primavera with the self-fulfilling prophecy of its theme: that snow will fall, and the world will go to sleep. conjuring the surreality of renkas childhood landscapes, for all its reverie, primavera always orients itself toward the responsibilities of the present. there is an acknowledgment that all day dreams must lead back to reality, that all journeys must be fulfilled.

19-track compilation of songs recorded across 1983, most of which have never been released on vinyl before! bocal 5 were a no wave art group composed of doc pilot (synths, vocals), zouka dzaza (bass), florian guillou (synths), mickey lepron (electronic drums, bass) and evy tinguette (lead vocals). the project was born in november 1980 in tours, france as the brain child of doc pilot. between 1981 to 1986 bocal 5 recorded one 7inch single and a cassette-only album before taking a year off in 1984 to launch x-ray pop. influenced by erik satie, brigitte bardot, suicide and young marble giants, they call their music-minimum naive new wave.

bologna s frank agrario decided to take destiny into his own hands earlier this year, founding micronation records as an outlet for his music. the ladonia ep - named after a disputed micro-nation in southern sweden - is agrario s second missive for the imprint, and features a particularly luscious, amospheric dancefloor roller named after the state s most famous landmark, a sculpture called -nimis-. arguably even better is -i played that track already , a dusty, detroit style deep house cut blessed with a bold cowbell line, sustained chords, and a nagging vocal hook. rick wade provides a deliciously deep and soulful interpretation of that track, while the softly jazzy, broken-house track -lesboa- is also worth a listen.

eduardo makes his return to nonplus with the sensitive compartmented information ep. eduardo is one of techno’s most dedicated underground legends and continues on a path unaffected by fads or fashions. following on from his sequoia symposium in april last year again we have a 4 tracker exploring the deep realms of techno.

this september will see visionquest release selector from luke hess, coming accompanied with remixes from delsin artist d5, label co-founder lee curtiss and maher daniel. detroit artist luke hess has been one of the most celebrated acts coming out of the motor city over the past decade with an impressive back catalogue boasting material on omar s fxhe, carl craigs planet e, echochord and kontra-musik to name but a few. here though we see hess join the roster of visionquest following recent output from wareika, vlad caia, tuccillo and mirko loko.

re:works is the result of a groundbreaking project that sees the rich catalogue of decca classics being opened to some of the worlds foremost electronic producers, seeking to further establish the common ground between the historic and modern day aspects of musical composition. ranging from the experimental to the more recognisable 4/4 structures of house and techno, re:works elicits the full range of emotion – from the heartbreaking to the ecstatic. francesco tristano takes on one of the most recogniseable piano riffs of all time with his remix of ‘merry christmas mr. laurence, which, after a brief introduction of that seminal loop, descends into deep, dubby house cut punctuated by shimmering keys. patrice baumels remix is an intense techno workout that is in many ways the antithesis of his definitive roar: a non-stop pummeling via clattering percussion and a heavy, pulsing bassline. completing the package, grammy-nominated studio legend martin buttrich delivers a melancholy, minimalistic techno take on saties gnossienne no.4

most fans of the blues believe it was born in the mississippi delta shortly before 1900. they are definitively wrong. the blues had its roots in other forms of older black music that are traced to the music of west africa. in that sense, mali music constitutes the dna of the blues and the griots can be identified as the direct ancestors of the rural bluesmen. baba sissoko is from mali and he is the last undisputed griot alive.

the martinez brothers cuttin headz returns with a new ep from the butcha, entitled 10001 and backed with two remixes from matrixxman. phil moffa aka the butcha is a new york city based musician, producer and engineer most notably known for his works alongside dj spider and anthony parasole for sublevel sounds / plan b recordings and alongside seth troxler for hypercolour. here we see him return to the fledgling cuttin headz imprint with his idiosyncratic take on raw, emotive house music following his destination void release alongside dj spider and brendon moeller last year. up first are two originals from the butcha, the first of which 99 prince st. lays focus on echoing atmospherics, snaking rhodes and shuffling dubbed out percussion while the latter, 6 hubert st. pivots towards an amalgamation an upfront organic rhythm alongside a weighty low end drive and wandering synth swells. to complete the package san franciscos matrixxman delivers two interpretations, firstly the acidized mix which as the name would suggest draws on squelching 303 lines layered over processed snippets from the original before the digital bonus transhuman mix closes on an arpeggio fuelled techno tip.

‘temporary insanity remixes’ is a 12” featuring the redefinitions of the two original productions of detroit veteran terrence dixon, turned upside down by three of the most groundbreaking electronic music artists as voiski, pangaea and cosmin trg, appearing alongside label head simone gatto. out022 operates as a modern take of old school sounds, an hybrid union of all melodic techno sub forms – these remixes keep the mental locked groove material of dixon’s tracks, adding emotionally irradiating patterns and each producer’s typical paths.
